As I can’t get to one of the Disney parks for Easter I thought I would inject some Disney Easter magic into my house with some Disney Easter Bunting.
You will need:
Felt – a variety of colours
Card – to be used as a template
Hot glue gun and glue / needle and thread of colours matching your Easter eggs
Scissors
Ribbon
A way to hang it up on your desired location.
Step 1:
Cut out an Easter egg template out of card. This will allow all of your Easter eggs to be the same size.
Step 2:
On a scrap piece of paper plan out which Disney characters you want to make your Disney Easter eggs, making sure that you have the right colours and amounts of felt that you’re going to need.
Step 3
Use your template Easter egg and cut out all the base colours of your easter eggs then cut out all the required pieces you need.
Step 4
Hot glue gun your pieces together. If you’re under the age of 18 you need to ask your parents permission and/or help. Trust me, I burnt myself twice and it’s not fun! Here’s a picture of my friend gluing the pieces on while I ice my thumb.
If you don’t have access to a hot glue gun you could always sew on the decorations.
Step 5
Roll out a line of ribbon and plan where you want to place your Disney Easter eggs then either glue them down or sew them on.
If you choose to glue them down I recommend putting an old scrap piece of paper under your ribbon because if you’re ribbon is made of a mesh material like mine, then the glue is going to ooze through the ribbon onto the surface underneath.
Step 6
Hang your bunting wherever you choose. I choose the walls above my desk.
Let me know if you choose to make this Disney Easter bunting and which characters you choose to make.
Come back on Friday 10th April for another Disney blog.
Anthony
Gonzales plays Miguel Rivera, but that wasn’t always going to be the case. Coco
is Pixar’s longest running film that was in the production stages. Pixar had
been working on Coco since 2011 and in the beginning they brought in actors who
they wanted to voice the roles. The voice actor for Miguel was chosen but he
went through puberty while waiting to voice the character and so he was
replaced by Anthony. However Pixar allowed the original voice actor Emilio
Fuentes to voice a small line in the film.
Thanks
to the actor changing we now have a singing Miguel. Originally he was only
going to be play the guitar, but when they realised Anthony Gonzalez could
sing, they made Miguel a singer. It was his beautiful singing voice that sealed
the deal and got him the role.
Miguel’s
last name is Rivera as a tribute to Jonas Rivera who worked on Pixar’s
successful films Up and Inside Out.
Gael
Garcia Bernal plays Héctor, in both the English and the Spanish version.
Benjamin
Bratt plays Ernesto de la Cruz. This isn’t Benjamin’s first job voice acting,
he has voiced Manny the camera man in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 1 and 2
and Eduardo and El Macho in Despicable 2. He also played Eric Matthews in Miss
Congeniality.
Alanna
Ubach plays Mamá Imelda. Alanna is best known for playing Serena in Legally
Blonde, she’s won of Elle Wood’s best friends. She is actually reprising that
role for Legally Blonde 3 which is coming soon.
Renee
Victor plays Abuelita. Pueblito Guzmán is the woman Abuelita is based off.
Pueblito was brought into the studio and asked to make different kinds of faces
while photo and videos were taken. The animators examined the pictures and
video in minute detail, seeing how a smile would change her face to how it
could turn into a frown. It was harder to make Pueblito angry because she was
having such a good time at Pixar but she managed it in the end.
Jamie
Camil plays Papá and Sofia Espinosa plays Mamá
Alfonso
Arau plays Papá Julio.
Herbert
Siguenza plays Tio Oscar and Tio Felipe.
Gabriel
Iglesias plays the clerk.
Lombardo
Boyar plays Plaza Mariachi and Gustavo.
Ana
Ofelia Murguia plays Mamá Coco.
Natalia
Cordova-Buckley plays Frida Kahlo.
Selene
Luna plays Tia Rosita.
Edward
James Olmos plays Chicharrón, the old man who is forgotten by his family and
takes the journey onward after death. Edward accepted the role of Chicharrón
without truly knowing the story. He recorded his lines two years before the
film aired and watched it just so he knew what to talk about during press
release interviews and he was shocked at how beautiful and touching the film
was. He became immensely proud to be part of the film
Development
Lee
Unkrich was coming to the end of working on Toy Story 3 and he started thinking
about what would come next. Lee was very interested in Dia de los Muertos, the
festival in Mexico where relatives who had passed away, could come back to
earth to see their family. The important sense of family in the film is what pushed
him to make this film rather than other ideas he had.
Sound
has come a long way in animation, there was a time when sound wasn’t possible
and that was less than 100 years ago. Now with Coco, Pixar have taken sound to
another level, what was once seen as impossible has now been accomplished by
Pixar. When any character plays the guitar, the exact notes and chords that
they play are the exact notes and chords that you hear in the film. It’s
incredible! The animators filmed people playing guitars in real life so closely
and slowed it down to study it and use it for the basis of their animation.
The film
was originally going to be called “Dia de los Muertos”, obviously
naming it after the Mexican holiday. All was fine until Pixar tried to
trademark the phrase so they could create merchandise with the phrase on.
People weren’t happy, specifically the Mexican American community. Disney and
Pixar realised there mistake and changed the name of the film to
“Coco”.
Research
Groups
of animators and filmmakers working on Coco visited Mexico to learn as much
about the place as they could. They went and studied the people, the
architecture, the food, their traditions and the atmosphere. One place on their
travels that really stood out to them was the Mexican City of Guanajuato which
ended up being the animators main reference point when designing and building
the land of the dead. They liked how the place was full of warm colours like
yellow, orange and red and how the buildings were stacked up on top of one
another over the hillsides.
Music
Michael
Giacchino was brought back to Pixar to work on the music for the film. Michael
has done the music for Up, Ratatouille, Inside Out, The Incredibles and much
more so it’s clear to say he knows how to work with Pixar. However, for Coco,
being that the film is set in Mexico the filmmakers wanted to make sure that
they were showing off the music of Mexico so they brought in Mexican musicians
Germaine Frances and Camilo Lara. Camilo was there practicially from the
beginning introducing Pixar to the world of Mexican music, including Mariachi
bands and Ranchera music.
The
music was recorded in Mexico city with more than 50 musicians, a lot of which
used native Mexican instruments.
Songwriters
Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson Lopez, the married duo behind the wonders of
Frozen are also behind Coco’s most favourable song “Remember Me”.
Promotion and Reception
To
promote the release of “Coco”, Southwest Airlines transformed there
Boeing 737-700 Airplane into an advert for Coco with the Coco title and two
guitar crossing over. It is also covered with decorative yellow and red shapes.
Coco
gained positive reviews worldwide, but the best reviews came from Mexico, where
the film is set. Prior to Coco being released in 2017 The Avengers, which was
released in 2012 held the number 1 spot for top-grossing film in Mexico, until
Coco surpassed it. In Mexico Coco made over 827 million pesos, which is $43
million.
The film
did so well it won two Academy Awards, one for Best Animated film and the
second for Best Original song. It also won a Golden Globe for Best Animated
Film.
Over in
Brazil, the name of the film had to be changed due to the fact that
“Coco” it could have been mistaken for the Portuguese word
“Cocô” which means poop. Instead the film is titled “Viva”.
Easter Eggs
It isn’t
just dead people who live in the land of the dead, it’s dead technology which
is why you’ll see an old Macintosh computer and walkie talkie radios.
For the
19th film in a row, John Ratzenberger returns to voice a Pixar character,
because he is Pixar’s good luck charm. In Coco the character John voices is
Juan Ortodoncia, a ghost who says only one word “Gracias”.
On the
front of the door to the office in The Land of the Dead it says A113, which is
a reference to a room at the California Institute of the Arts where many
animators have worked including Tim Burton, Pete Docter and Brad Bird.
The
Pizza Planet Truck can be seen at the beginning of the film when Miguel looks
out the window and the truck drives past.
Woody,
Buzz and Mike Wazowski piñatas can be seen as Miguel is walking around the
streets.
In the
film Frida correctly identifies Dante as a Xolo dog which is very apt because
Frieda was person in real life who stopped the Xolo dog from going extinct. The
breed of dog was in decline due to it not being popular, but when Frieda and
her husband started including the dog in the subject of their paintings it
helped boost the popularity of the pup and saved the breed.
I really
hope you enjoyed learning about the making of Coco, come back on Friday 2nd
November for a blog where I sort Pixar characters into Hogwarts houses.
The third and final instalment in the Pixar Easter eggs trilogy is all about the Pixar theory.
The Pixar Theory
The Pixar theory is that all Pixar films fit inside the same universe but we are not seeing them in the right order.
The theory also supports the idea that three things are developing : humans, animals and AI Artificial Intelligence.
The first film in the Pixar theory is:
The Good Dinosaur: This film is proof that animals are developing strong enough to learn to survive without humans, however most theorists believe that animals haven’t learnt to adapt well enough to their surroundings and that the dinosaurs do still die out, due to the extreme weather and that is why when we get to Brave, our next film, there are no dinosaurs.
Brave: This film is one of the most, if not the most important in the theory and that is because of the witch, she is believed to be Boo, from Monsters Inc and this is where it becomes a bit confusing. I will do my best to explain as simply as I can. When the Monsters in the film Monsters Inc step through the doors, they are actually stepping back in time. We will talk more about this later.
Boo grew up and was continually obsesses with finding Kitty, she found a way to travel back to the time of Brave and that is why we see a Sulley sketch on wood in her cabin. Boo also harnessed the power of doorways to be her way of travelling through time.
The Incredibles: Third film into the theory and this is where we meet the further rise of the humans which they have been perfecting since the time of The Good Dinosaur, but we also see the rise of Artificial Intelligence. The Omnidroid, which was initially created by Syndrome. The same sort of technology which brought to life the Omnidroid brought to life the toys in Toy Story, which just so happens to be the next film in the theory.
Toy Story and Toy Story 2: Within the first film the toys show their loyalty to their owners and show how this kind of artificial intelligence is harmless and full of love, but by Toy Story 2 there is some doubt starting to arise. Jessie shows how toys and there mistreatment can cause anger, resentment and jealousy. which shows how they are getting stronger and their feelings more complex, but more on that later in the blog.
Finding Nemo and Ratatouille: These films are both indications that the animals are developing, they are getting stronger and they are becoming more knowledgeable.
Toy Story 3: In Toy Story 3, which takes place not long after Toy Story 2, we see that artificial intelligence has developed further once more, specifically through Lotso. He is a teddy bear that smells of strawberries and is willing to allow his fellow toys to be murdered, yeah, not nice is he. Luckily by the end of the film we see that he is put in his place, but his development of anger and power is just a hint at what is to come.
Up: In Up we are reintroduced to the rise of the animals who with the help of Charles Muntz, a super villain who has learnt to survive for many years, helps the animals learn to talk. Now because Charles falls to his death at the end of this movie, we don’t know what the surviving dogs did with this technology, maybe a future Pixar film will explain this.
Cars, Cars 2 and Cars 3: The situation on earth is becoming problematic with the animals rising up and the humans have ruined the world and are now living on the axiom so the machines have risen, more specially the cars. The theory goes that there was a fuel shortage, the cars could no longer survive which is why when Wall-E takes place none of the cars have survived.
Wall-E: This film takes place not that long after Cars 3. Machines have worked out that they can control humans through mass production of gadgets and gizmos a plenty that they need to survive off of, to the point where the planet is uninhabitable.
The humans return in there depleted numbers and begin life again and the plant that they plant, turns into the tree from A Bugs Life.
A Bugs Life: Bugs have been developing since The Good Dinosaur, they have found a way to develop and grow to the point where there are shops, bars and entertainment and they can live for a lot longer than real bugs.
Monsters University and Monsters Inc: These are the last films in the theory. The theory goes that either animals in there evolved form mated with each other to make monsters or that due to living in space for so long humans bodies mutated and turned people are into monsters.
It is important that this is just the bare bones of the theory and a lot of things have been missed out as it’s rather complex. The other thing to point out is that the theory was created by John Negroni so you should check out his website because he has a much more detailed blog about the subject.
I hope you enjoyed this blog, give it a like if you did and come back on Monday 30th for a blog all about Bambi.
In this blog post I am going to be continuing on from Mondays blog post all about Pixar Easter eggs. In this blog we will be looking at some of the hidden Easter eggs in Pixar films that have sparked fan theories. Let’s start with…
Darla: You first meet Darla in Finding Nemo. Darla is the niece of P.Sherman and within this film we learn that she wears braces and is also a fish murderer.
The next time we see Darla is in 2010 in Toy Story 3 on the cover of “Tween Zinc” magazine that Molly (Andy’s sister) is reading.
The next, and currently the last time she has been seen in the Pixar universe is in 2016 in Finding Dory. The picture of Darla holding the dead fishy can be seen in the background on the wall of the science lab where Dory is being held when she is talking to Hank.
These three sightings of Darla have created several theories. My most favourite theory is that Darla is a pop star and that is why she is on the front cover of the magazine and also the reason why she wears a “Rock n Roll Girl” jumper in Finding Nemo.
The reason why the picture of Darla turns up in the Marine Life Institute is that P. Sherman travels there to discuss with the workers, the strange activity of his fish that mysteriously disappeared.
Emma Jean: There is a postcard in UP from someone called Emma Jean that reads “We are having a swell time! Wishing you were here!” An answer has been given as to who she is by Pete Docter the director of Up. He said that Emma Jean was a love interest for Carl before he settled down with Ellie. Emma grew very close to Ellie and they often went on shopping trips together.
One thing to be aware of is that many people have also been stating that the postcard turns up in Toy Story 3 on Andy’s bulletin board, there is a rather convincing picture of Google images showing this postcard, however after combing though the film the postcard isn’t anywhere to be seen. I don’t have an answer as to where the online photo came from, maybe it’s only on certain releases of the film or maybe it’s fake. Please let me know in the comments below on your thoughts about this.
Andy’s Mum: In Toy Story we see that Andy is obsessed with Woody and being a cowboy even dressing up in a cowboy themed clothing and importantly a cowboy hat, but if you look closely at that hat it isn’t a perfect copy of Woody’s . It isn’t until you watch Toy Story 2 and you meet Emily, the original owner of Jessie that it makes sense. The hat that Emily wears, is modelled after Jessie’s hat and it is the same hat that Andy wears meaning Emily, is Andy’s mum. She never gave away her cowgirl hat, she passed it down to her son.
In Jessie’s flashback you can see that it has a white ribbon, this ribbon after years of storage and then Andy using it has dirtied it.
Dinoco: There is no theory that goes along with this Easter egg, it is just a tiny added gesture which helps to further tie the films together.
Dinoco is an oil company and gas station. It can be found in the Toy Story and Cars franchises and on a lighter in Wall-E and it is always seen with a different logo. For example in Toy Story the logo is an Apatosaurus, whereas in Cars it is a T-Rex.
Although this isn’t confirmed some people believe that Dinoco was based on the Sinclair Oil Corporation because they also feature an Apatosaurus in its logo. Furthermore Sunoco which is a chain of gas stations is the private fuel for NASCAR which is what Piston Cup is based on in the Car universe.
Buy N Large: This fictional company found in Wall-E, is the company that has caused all of earth’s human inhabitants to desert the planet that creations like Wall-E have to clean up. The company started back on July 25th 2007 as a seller of frozen yogurt. From there the business , which was then called “Buy Yogurt” bought the business “Large Industries” which sold men’s suits.
By 2057 Buy N Large was a leader in EVERYTHING, however it took until 2105 to become world leaders. Your probably wondering where I learnt all of this. Well for a short time as a marketing ploy Pixar bought the domain Buy n Large and they created a website detailing the history of company. Sadly this website doesn’t exist anymore but it was nice while it lasted.
I hope you enjoyed learning some of the Pixar theories, come back on Friday 27th for the next instalment of Pixar Easter eggs.
In this blog I am going to introduce you to some of the major Disney Easter eggs you can find in the films and some of the fan theories that they have sparked.
Rapunzel, Anna and Elsa
Possibly the most well known Easter egg is during Frozen. When Anna opens up the gates to the guests for the coronation, Anna walks past none other than Rapunzel and Eugene A.K.A Flynn Rider. Among other things, this cameo has prompted viewers to believe that Anna and Elsa are actually Rapunzel’s cousins. The theory goes that it is Anna and Elsa’s Father, Agnarr and Rapunzel’s Mother, Arianna who are brother and sister because they look very similar. If this theory were true, and I believe it is, Anna could have been named after her aunt Arianna.
Within the theory it is believed that Agnarr and Iduna, Elsa and Anna’s Mum and Dad are on the way to Rapunzel’s wedding. This aspect of the theory has actually been confirmed by Jennifer Lee, one of the film’s writers.
I have seen a few people discuss this theory and none of them have spoken about what I have found.
Iduna, Elsa and Anna’s Mother’s name means “youthful”, “eternal youth” and “rejuvenation”. What does this remind you of? Yep, you guessed it, Rapunzel. I think it was Iduna herself, her Mother, Father, Grandmother or Grandfather who created the flower and it was Iduna who gave Rapunzel’s parents the tip to find the flower to help Rapunzel’s Mother and baby survive her illness.
Tarzan, Anna and Elsa
You are lead to believe that Agnarr and Iduna die in a shipwreck, but some theorists can’t help noticing the similarities between Agnarr and Iduna and Tarzan’s parents. Instead of ending their lives in the shipwreck it is believed that they make it to land, with their newborn son, build a tree house and are then eaten by a tiger. This theory is less likely to be true, the stories don’t match up completely, for one they are years apart and Tarzan’s parents ship burns in a fire, Elsa and Anna’s parents ship is overcome by the waves, but still it is nice to think that they could be related, I mean they do look very similar.
Jane and Belle
Mrs. Potts and Chip make a cameo in Tarzan which has lead people to believe that either Jane is related to Belle or that she at least is friendly enough with her to allow her to be given crockery from the Beasts castle.
The only evidence that they might be related, is the fact that they have very similar dress sense, both are attracted to seemingly uncontrollable men that they have to domesticate. They both have eccentric fathers and they both like exploring and learning more about the world around them. I don’t think it would be crazy to suggest that both Jane and Belle’s Fathers are brother.
The Rescuers an X Rated Movie?
These Easter eggs are harmless and mostly created by audiences reading into minute details of the film, and there is nothing wrong with this, however not all Easter eggs are so welcome, in fact some have been removed. For example in the film The Rescuers, during the scene where Bianca and Bernard are flying through the city in a sardine can, in one of the houses you could see an image of a real life topless woman stretching. This Easter egg wasn’t found until 20 years after the original release and caused over 3 million of the films to be recalled. No one knows who put this picture into the film, but Disney has assured the public that it wasn’t one of their animators.
Easter Eggs
Some Easter Eggs don’t lead to any major theories, they are just a nice thing to spot in the movie so here are some you can try and look for:
Scar in the form of a throw rug can be seen in Hercules.
Both Lady and the Tramp can be seen in 101 Dalmatians.
There is a Mulan poster and a Dumbo toy in Lilo and Stitch.
The King and Grand Duke from Cinderella can be seen in The Little Mermaid along with Mickey, Donald and Goofy.
Jack Skellington’s shadow, King Triton as a Mardi Gras float, and the magic lamp and flying carpet from Aladdin can be seen in Princess and the Frog.
A Stitch teddy is in Treasure Planet.
Belle is walking through the streets in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Pinocchio the puppet is in Tangled.
There is a wanted photo of Hans in Big Hero 6 and his statue is also blown up in the film.
This is just a small selection of Easter eggs that can be seen in Disney films If you want to find out more I would recommend the YouTube channel Super Carlin Brothers.
Please do let me know in the comments what your most favourite Easter egg is and I will be back next Monday for a Review of the film Goodbye Christopher Robin.
